Lezma’s head was spinning from tiredness and excitement. Licking her lips, she went to the window and stared out emptily. Her eyes caught the brightness of the morning star, still brilliant against the lemon-blue of the lightening sky. Orion had long since passed into the West leaving only Ursa Minor—the Little Bear—its arm outstretched, clinging to the North Star like an orphaned child clutching a shiny toy—the only object memory of a now dead parent. But, even as she looked at this forsaken progeny against the still dark upper layers of the night, it began to fade. She jumped as she heard the squawk of a duck and the flutter of wings against the bare branches of the dark sleeping trees that clustered somewhere in the shadows at the base of the cliff. She rubbed her sore eyes then heard Elizabeth moving behind her. A trembling hand touched her shoulder.

“The morning star,” said Lezma. “It looks so bright. So joyful.”
